20 Aug Addo Elephant Park
For the elephant addicts a visit to Addo will be especially rewarding. The park is about an hours drive from Port Elizebeth, ( 72kms), and as such is very convenient for fly-in visitors who can self drive or make arrangements with local operators. The reserve has very comfortable self catering chalets and for those who wish to be catered for the main camp has a good restuarant.
The accomodation includes the Addo Rest camp, Tented Spekboom camp, private luxury Lodges, and Bush camps.
The park was proclaimed in 1931 to protect the remaining 11 elephants in an area of about 2000 hectares. The Park now encompasses and area of 180000 heactares, including Bird Island off the coast, and elephant now number about 450.
As well as the elephant the park has lion, buffalo, eland, hartebeeste, zebra, and a large number of small mammals, and birds.
