Mapungubwe was the capital of an ancient civilization that lived on the banks of the Limpopo River at its confluence with the Shashi River. This is now the corner of SA, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

  Kruger National Park, proclaimed in 1898 by Paul Kruger (Sabie Game Reserve from 1898 to 1926), is globally reknowned for its wild life, but there is also a wide diversity of flora, from the Crocodile River in the south to the Limpopo River in the north, a distance of 360 kilometers, and encompasing an area of 19485 square kilometers.

Cecil John Rhodes (1853 - 1902), a controversial individual in South Africa, was born in England, and came out to Natal, before moving up to the newly discovered diamond fields. In his short life he managed to accumulate significant wealth, and enter into politics, becoming the Prime Minister of the Cape Province. He also went on to found Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).

A little known place of interest is the Phalaborwa Copper mine viewpoint about 7 km south of the town along Koper street to the mine entrance. The viewpoint is open to the public during the daytime and gives wonderful views over the "Big Hole ' and surrounding lowveld. A great spot for landscape, sunrise or sunset images.
