Mapungubwe was the capital of an ancient civilization that lived on the banks of the Limpopo River at its confluence with the Shashi River. This is now the corner of SA, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

Haenertsburg lies on the road between Pietersburg (Polokwane) and Tzaneen in the Magoebaskloof area. It is very easy to bypass this small village, but avoid this temptation and either drop in for a visit or better still stay in one of the many guesthouses.

A little known place of interest is the Phalaborwa Copper mine viewpoint about 7 km south of the town along Koper street to the mine entrance. The viewpoint is open to the public during the daytime and gives wonderful views over the "Big Hole ' and surrounding lowveld. A great spot for landscape, sunrise or sunset images.
