06 Jul NAMIBIA – Quiver Tree Forest and Giants Playground
Ones first sighting of the quiver tree, (Aloidendrum dichotomum) is always memorable but if you want to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of them, a forest of them, head for Keetmanshoop and look for the signs to this great natural sight, about 14 kilometers north east of the town. Amongst the dolerite rocks are the distinctive Kokerbooms or Quiver Trees. The trees can grow up to eight metres high and a metre wide at the base. The starkness of the trees in this harsh climate is a special sight.
A short distance away is the Giant’s Playground, a natural phenomena despite appearing to be the work of man. The weathered doloritic stones appear to be the vestiges of a large ancient settlement but this weathered magna, according to geologists, dates back over 100 million years and and the area is in excess of 100000 square kilometers in extent.
These two natural attractions are a must see for visitors. Access is on the Gannabos Guest Farm and is a National Monument.
