Port Alfred was established in the 1820’s by British Settlers in the Albany County. The town lies on the mouth of the Kowie River and the harbour was established in the 1840’s which allowed tall ships to berth in the mouth.
The surrounds of the mouth have been extensively canalised to establish marinas upon which commercial properties and homes have been built.
Port Alfred has become a popular tourist resort and a favoured retirement town. Activities include beach bathing, canoeing, sailing, and a the Port Alfred Golf Course.
