14 Jul Haenertsburg – Magoebaskloof
Haenertsburg lies on the road between Pietersburg (Polokwane) and Tzaneen in the Magoebaskloof area. It is very easy to bypass this small village, but avoid this temptation and either drop in for a visit or better still stay in one of the many guesthouses.
The village sprung up with the discovery of gold in 1887, and the associated rush, soon subsided when the workable gold ran out. What remains is a quaint village, that performs a task of hosting, hiking, fishing, and cycling, and not to mention its Spring Fair.
Within the confines of the village is an interesting cemetery, good restuarants, and of interest to military specialists, a war memorial. This memorial has a reconstructed barrel of the last Long Tom Artillery piece that was destroyed in April 1901, as the Boers had to relinquish big weaponry, and resort to guerrilla warfare. Also commemorated, are the service of persons from the area in the local, regional, and international arena.
